What subjects are needed to work at Transnet?

You will need: Grade 12 (matric) with mathematics and physical science, pass a pre-entry examination and a medical examination.

Main requirements for some courses :

Operator: Lifting Equipment (OLE): As an OLE you will be focusing on supporting Port and Terminal operations.

You will need:

Grade 12 (matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science,

Code 8/EB driver’s licence valid for at least three years,

Computer literate,

Be physically fit and healthy,

Be prepared to work shifts and in adverse weather conditions,

Pass a pre-entry examination and a medical examination, which will include an assessment of hand-eye coordination, depth perception and the ability to work at heights.

A technical certificate knowledge N1-N6 will be an added advantage.

Skipper Port Operations (SPO): As an SPO, you’ll be in charge of a vessel over 25 tons, but less than 200 tons, in a port operations area.

You will need:

Grade 12 (matric) with mathematics and physical science,

pass a pre-entry examination and a medical examination.

Marine Motorman Grade II (MMG): As a MMG, you’ll undertake maintenance, repairs and servicing of engines and auxiliaries on board a vessel in a port operations area, under the supervision of the Chief Engineer.

Here you will need:

Grade 12 (matric) with mathematics and physical science,

An EGPR/GPR (general purpose rating),

Pass a pre-entry examination and a medical examination,and​

Be physically fit and healthy.

What are the Minimum entry requirements?

Minimum requirements vary with each course however a Grade 12 with a Level 4 in the following compulsory subjects:

English; Mathematics, Physical Science

How to apply:

External candidates that wish to apply for those courses that are open to the private sector are required to contact the Maritime school of Excellence’s Learner Administration department to enrol on the relevant course.

Please note: Candidates should use the Careers tab to apply. People should apply when they see an advertisement in their local or national newspapers. You will then submit your application letter, accompanied by your Matric Certificate, Curriculum Vitae and supporting documentation. These should be sent to the relevant Human Resources manager.​
