Univen : Call for indigenous knowledge systems postgraduate and post-doctoral scholarships


The Department of Science and Technology (DST)-National Research Foundation (NRF) Centre in Indigenous Knowledge Systems (CIKS) are pleased to announce the Call for Postgraduate Student and Postdoctoral Nominations.  Applications for will be accepted for the following INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS FOCUS AREAS:

  1. Food Security
  2. Traditional Medicine
  3. Bio-Diversity and Environment
  4. Curriculum studies and Development with (an emphasis on emerging quest for non-western paradigms)

Complete applications must be submitted to the Directorate of Research & Innovation on or before 17 February
Application Forms and Attachments:

  • Research Proposal – Project Description (max of 3000 words, including Research Budget and Workplan)
  • Academic Record
  • Proof of Registration for current level of study
  • Signed Conditions of Grant with NRF

Levels of study to be supported include:

  • Honours                                              R 15 000
  • Masters                                                R 60 000
  • Doctoral                                               R 120 000
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship:              R 210 000

The CIKS virtual centre Hub is provided by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in partnership with North-West University (NWU), University of Limpopo (UL), University of South Africa (UNISA), and University of Venda (UNIVEN).
In collaboration with various IKS stakeholders including organizations and community knowledge holders and practitioners within and outside South Africa, CIKS develops, promotes and affirms IKS for improved quality of life. CIKS interfaces IKS with other knowledge and technological systems for the further development of IKS for sustainable development and community livelihood. CIKS promotion of human capital development focuses on support for postgraduate training (honours, masters, doctoral and post-doctoral fellows). The CIKS strives to be a world rallying Hub for IKS research, postgraduate training, networking, knowledge brokerage and community engagement.
