Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Entry Requirements
The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) admission requirements are designed to evaluate your suitability for the course you wish to pursue. It’s crucial to pay close attention to these requirements as they play a significant role in the application process.
Eligibility for Admission
Admission requirements vary depending on the program you intend to study. Here are the criteria for certificate courses, diplomas, and degrees:
General Application Requirements:
- A Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification is the minimum requirement for admission to studies at VUT.
- A pass mark in at least one of the languages of instruction (usually English) at Higher Grade (HG) or Standard Grade (SG) is necessary.
- If an applicant presents an N3 qualification, it should consist of at least four subjects, with pass marks in two official languages (including English) at Senior Certificate level (SG).
- Additional requirements are specified for each course/ instructional program.
- In faculties of Engineering, Applied, and Computer Sciences, the minimum required symbol for Mathematics, Physical Science, and sometimes English is HG (E) or SG(C).
- For other faculties and depending on the desired course, recommended subjects include Accounting, Business Economics, Mathematics, Typing, Biology, Home Economics, Art, Physical Science, Clothing, and Needlework.
- Degree courses have specific admission requirements for post-diploma and degree studies, available upon request.
- All applications are selected on merit by the relevant department.
- Candidates aged 23 or older may apply for conditional admission.
- The application must be accompanied by a certificate of formal qualifications and a recommendation from the applicant’s employer, stating necessary experience and communication abilities.
Minimum Entry Requirements for Higher Certificate:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi.
- Institutional and program needs may require specific combinations of recognized NSC subjects and achievement levels.
Minimum Entry Requirements for Diploma:
- NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects.
- Institutional and program needs may require appropriate combinations of NSC subjects and levels of achievement.
Minimum Entry Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree:
- NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from recognized 20-credit NSC subjects.
