SARS Claims

This article provides all the information on SARS Claims by giving the process of submitting a claim to SARS and the timeframe it takes for SARS to process your claims.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) allows taxpayers to claim various deductions and rebates to reduce their taxable income. These claims relate to medical expenses, education expenses, retirement contributions, and more.

Taxpayers need to submit a tax return to SARS so we can calculate your tax liability based on the income you declare and the tax-deductible expenses you have incurred for a year of assessment. In some cases, it may result in a refund.

The annual Filing Season is when you will be required to submit a return. For most taxpayers, this runs from July to November every year.

If you need to submit an income tax return, you can do so through several channels:

  • eFiling on your computer
  • The SARS MobiApp
  • Filing electronically at a SARS branch where an agent will assist you.
  • Requesting a return to be posted to you and completing your return manually and submitting it at a SARS branch

Remember to have your supporting documents at hand when completing your return. Not all taxpayers need to submit an income tax return.

You must request an eSTT refund by completing Part A of the REV1600 form by emailing it to the following email address: lbqueries@sars.gov.za.

The following documents must be sent together with the signed REV1600:

  • Proof of payment – eSTT receipt printed from the eFiling website;
  • A signed letter from you asking for a refund from SARS;
  • Certified copy of identity document; and
  • Original bank statement or ATM/internet generated statement or ABSA eStamped statement not more than three months old that confirms the account holder’s name, bank name, account number, account type and branch code.

You will be informed if the refund request is declined.
